Frequently Asked
Questions
01
What’s the “twisted” part of
Twisted Tap?
The “twist” refers to the unique blend of maple and black walnut syrup and maple and birch syrup to create our signature blends. We also infuse additional flavors into our syrup to create a one-of-a-kind product that is perfect for adding a special touch to your breakfast or cooking recipes.
02
If I’m allergic to nuts, do I need to avoid walnut syrup?
According to a study performed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, researchers concluded that walnut syrup doesn’t contain the protein that triggers a reaction in people allergic to nuts. People in the study with known walnut allergies had no negative reactions to walnut syrup. However, we recommend that you use caution if you have a known nut allergy.
03
What's the difference between pure Michigan maple syrup and pancake syrups from the grocery store?
Pure maple syrup is made with maple sap as the only ingredient (or a mix of maple and walnut sap, in our case). Pancake syrups from the store usually contain no real maple sap but are made with high fructose corn syrup, imitation maple flavor, and preservatives.
04
Do you ship?
Yes! We ship our products so that people from all over can enjoy the delicious syrup from our Caledonia, MI, woods.
05
How long will my maple syrup keep?
Maple syrup will stay good unopened at room temperature or opened in the refrigerator for about 2 years.
06
Can I freeze maple syrup?
Yes, but take some out of the container first to allow the frozen syrup to expand. If you store a large amount of syrup in the freezer, you can thaw it in about two hours, remove some syrup from the refrigerator, and then refreeze it several times.
07
Can I heat maple syrup and then put it back in the bottle?
Maple syrup tastes great when heated up for 30 seconds in the microwave! Afterward, it's fine to put any remaining syrup back into the bottle.
08
I forgot to refrigerate my maple syrup after I opened it. Is it still good?
After some time, an opened bottle of unrefrigerated syrup will start to ferment and taste sour. If it smells sour, discard it. If you see a brown scum on the top and the syrup is not sour, you may skim off the top, boil the syrup (be sure to allow enough room for the syrup to double in volume) and skim off anything that comes to the top.
09
What are the crystals that sometimes form in the bottom of my maple syrup jug?
These are maple sugar crystals. They can form when syrup is stored for a long time, but you can still use them! Pour off the liquid syrup, pour a small amount of boiling water into the jug, and shake to break up and melt the crystals. The sugary liquid works for basting meat!
